As I am sure many writers know, National Novel Writing Month is upon us. For those who are not familiar with it, National Novel Writing Month is a worldwide event that takes place during the month of November that challenges creative minds to write 50,000 words in 30 days. There are several people I know who have reached their goal year after year; I am not one of those people.
I first started attempting this monstrous challenge back in 2013. I was doing good for the first day. I believe that I wrote a total of 1,600 words. After that work got in the way. I told myself that there was nothing I could do about it and let it go. Last year, I made the attempt again while stupidly working a full-time job, a part-time job, and freelancing. I had virtually no time to accomplish this feat, yet I managed to crank out a decent 3,200 words. I don’t know how I managed to double up from the previous year.
I figured that this year I may try again. However I am going to place my own spin on it. Instead of trying to write a novel, I am just going to write 50,000 words. Having the often hectic schedule I do, I will have to put down my foot to protect my writing time. Even though I have several freelance design projects on my plate, I am determined to get some writing time squeezed in. For me this challenge is more about starting a habit, its about getting myself to write again. Though like every writer, I hope to get something good scribbled down.
It may be wise for me to prepare some prompts or chapter ideas ahead of time so that I am not struggling at word 123 on Day 1. Maybe after having traveled to Las Vegas last week I may be compelled to work on my futuristic psychological thriller that takes place in the city of sin. We shall see.
